What Is the Barrington Brew Fest?

The Barrington Brew Fest is an annual craft beer festival held in Barrington, Illinois, and it has grown into one of the most anticipated summer traditions in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Now in its seventeenth year, the event brings together dozens of breweries from Illinois and across the Midwest for a single afternoon of tasting, conversation, and community. Rather than a trade show or an industry-only gathering, the Brew Fest is built for the public: anyone of legal drinking age can buy a ticket, collect a tasting glass, and spend the afternoon discovering beers they would never find on a grocery store shelf. It is a relaxed, walkable event where the people pouring the beer are often the same people who brewed it.

The festival takes place on Saturday, July 11, 2020, running from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. for general admission guests. Those who want a head start can purchase a VIP ticket, which opens the gates at 2:00 p.m. and offers an extra hour with the brewers before the main crowd arrives. Every ticket includes a commemorative tasting glass and a set number of pours, and additional tasting tickets are available on site for guests who want to sample more. Because the event is held outdoors, rain or shine, attendees are encouraged to plan for the weather and to dress comfortably for an afternoon on their feet.

What sets the Barrington Brew Fest apart from a typical beer garden is its scale and its focus. The brewery lineup is curated rather than crowded, so lines stay short and guests actually get to talk with the people behind the taps. Homebrewers, distributors, and local restaurant owners frequently attend as well, which gives the afternoon an easy, neighborly rhythm. Whether you are a longtime craft beer enthusiast with a notebook full of tasting notes or someone who simply enjoys a cold beer on a summer afternoon, the festival is designed to feel welcoming rather than intimidating.

What to Expect on Festival Day

Guests can expect a wide range of styles on tap, from crisp pilsners and session ales to hop-forward IPAs, rich stouts, sours, and seasonal fruit beers. Many participating breweries bring limited or experimental batches specifically for the event, which means even seasoned festival-goers usually find something new. Pour sizes are deliberately modest so that guests can sample broadly and responsibly, and volunteers are stationed throughout the grounds to answer questions about what is being served. Food vendors round out the experience with barbecue, sandwiches, snacks, and non-alcoholic options for designated drivers and guests who are not drinking.

Live music runs through the afternoon, giving the grounds a lively but never overwhelming soundtrack. Seating areas are set up for guests who want to sit down with a plate of food and take a break between tastings. The festival is a ticketed, twenty-one-and-over event, and staff check identification at the entrance, so guests should bring a valid photo ID along with their ticket. Parking is available near the grounds, and the organizers strongly encourage ride-sharing, designated drivers, or public transportation for anyone planning to sample more than a pour or two.

Because attendance is capped and tickets are sold in advance, the festival rarely feels overcrowded. Guests are welcome to come and go as they please during their session, and the VIP hour gives early arrivals a quieter, more personal window with the brewers. Volunteers from the community staff the gates, the pour stations, and the information tables, which is one of the reasons the atmosphere stays friendly and well organized year after year. If you have questions about accessibility, group tickets, or sponsorship, the festival's contact page is the fastest way to reach the organizing committee.

More Than a Party: Why the Festival Matters

The Barrington Brew Fest was founded as a fundraiser, and that purpose remains at the center of everything it does. Proceeds from ticket sales, sponsorships, and on-site raffles are directed to local nonprofit organizations that serve the Barrington area, supporting causes that range from youth programs and family services to community health and senior care. Over the course of seventeen years, the event has turned an afternoon of beer tasting into meaningful, recurring support for neighbors who need it most. That charitable foundation is what has kept volunteers, sponsors, and breweries coming back season after season.

Just as important is the role the festival plays in the local community itself. It gives small and independent breweries a chance to reach new customers, gives local restaurants and vendors a busy summer weekend, and gives residents a reason to spend an afternoon together in the town they share. Sponsorships from area businesses keep ticket prices reasonable while ensuring that a healthy share of every dollar raised goes back out into the community. In that sense, buying a ticket is both a good time and a small act of local investment.

Planning for the seventeenth annual event begins many months in advance, with a committee of volunteers coordinating breweries, vendors, permits, safety, and logistics. Breweries interested in pouring, businesses interested in sponsoring, and individuals who want to volunteer can all get involved by reaching out through the website. Whether you come for the beer, the music, the food, or simply to support a good cause, you are part of a tradition that has been building in Barrington for nearly two decades. We look forward to raising a glass with you on Saturday, July 11, 2020.
